Shirley was a legend on the Philly Jazz scene both as a player and educator. Heard here with Shirley are regular bandmates Arthur Harper on bass and Mickey Roker on drums.
Although internationally acclaimed for her organ playing, she is an authoritative pianist. It just seems all the record companies want to record her on organ. She can be heard on a few of her own CD's as well as many with "Lockjaw" Davis and her ex husband Stanley Turrentine. She and Trudy Pitts are the "mothers" of the Jazz organ.
Shirley passed away Sunday, March 10 2002
