Blatant Commercials
Philly Jazz is a non-profit, non-commercial site. In spite of this, I would like to recommend a few merchants on the web with whom I've had extraordinary experiences of one kind or another. I either know these folks personally, or have had very satisfactory dealings with them. Perhaps if I ever get ripped really badly on the Web. I'll include a rogue's gallery of offensive vendors as well. For now, however, let's accentuate the positive.
Jazz Improv magazine - Click the Button.
Cannonball Saxophones - These horns are all that ! I now play a Cannonball alto, tenor soprano, and baritone and am thrilled with them. I truly believe there is no better horn for the price. Ask Bootsie Barnes about his Cannonballs !!
RPC Mouthpieces - Anyway, sax players across the internet have been raving about Ron's product, and since he offers a money-back guarantee, there was nothing to lose. As it turns out, some great players out there also benefit from this fine craftsmanship. If you play the saxophone, you owe it to yourself to at least TRY one. My alto piece is like an old Meyer, but with more edge.
Windworks Studios Sax out of whack ?? Flute won't toot? These lovely ladies will fix you up (and they're pretty good about emergency service !!) They'll bend your metal into shape and have you in-tune, and your leaks plugged in no time.
Moore Brothers Wines - If you truly enjoy wine, Moore Bros. is a haven. Although it requires crossing the bridge to New Jersey, and suffering their drivers on the way, their wine shop is an oasis of sanity and dignity in a part of the state otherwise renown for couch dancing, and little else. Here you will find a wide range of wines, primarily from lesser-known vintners whose products speak volumes of the territories in which they are grown and transformed. Personally, I'd rather drink a bottle of $9.00 wine every day of the week that a $63.00 bottle every Saturday. These people know wines, and are not at all snobby. Stop in with a menu you're preparing and have a knowledgeable sommelier choose the wines you'll serve. You might be a bit chagrined to find the vintage you'd selected for your duck would be far too acidic for the orange sauce you'd planned, but isn't it better to find out before you pop the corks ?? Now in Wilmington too !!
PG Music makes several musical software products. My favourite is Band-in-a-Box, which provides the equivalent of a full band, arranger, staff of soloists and now composer right in your computer. In some ways, I feel the last bastions of human creativity have been violated by a heartless algorithm... on the other hand, it's way cool !! Imagine a rhythm section that plays only the tunes you call in your key, never gets tired, doesn't stink up your house with cheap dope or drink your beer, and the drummer doesn't hit on your wife. It's worth the money (and it's cheap at that !!)
