Richie Cole

     Richie hails very proudly from Trenton NJ.  The Philly Jazz policy on our friends across the river is to list them if they ask, or if I particularly like them a lot.  I love Richie Cole.  Lots of people complain that he's not serious enough.  Hell, this ain't opera, it's BEBOP !!  As an alto player myself (mediocre at best), I appreciate Richie's chops, which he has in abundance.  If playing bop is so easy for him that he can't help fooling around a little, more power to him.

    Richie gave me a couple of CD's while visiting at neighbor Jeff Gordon's house.  One is a new West Side Story work which is wonderful.  The other is a rare collaboration with Boots Randolph, where they trade Jazz and Nashville tunes.

That takes balls, but he carries it off gracefully.  Richie's bands often have an Alto/Guitar front line which gives them a distinctive sound.  Vic Juris is usually on guitar.
