Al Stauffer was a remarkable man. An accomplished bass player, legendary teacher, and good friend.
Al could have gone on the road with a number of name acts. He chose to stay in Philly, playing and teaching. His students number some of the best jazz musicians playing around the country today. His penchant for scatting along with his solos reminds one of a latter-day Slam Stewart.
Al played regularly with French émigré Bernard Peiffer in the Philly area. He also had a long-running gig with Tom Lawton at the Four Seasons. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Rest in Peace, Al ! You deserve it.
